We have seen skincare fridges all over the internet, on social media, and being pushed by big skincare companies and influencers, but what’s the real deal?

A skincare fridge is a fridge that has been specifically designed to store products such as moisturizers and cleansers. A lot of companies claim that they “lock in moisture” for your skin by keeping it cool, dry, and hydrated at all times.

What is a skincare fridge?

Let’s start from the basics. A skincare fridge is a fridge that has been specifically designed to store skincare products, such as moisturizers and cleansers. A lot of companies that produce these fridges claim that they “lock in moisture” and keep your skincare products at their most effective for use on your skin.

How does it work?

In order to understand how skincare fridges work, you have to think about the process of evaporation. Evaporation is when a liquid changes its state and becomes a gas. You can see this occur whenever you leave water sitting out in the open air – it will eventually evaporate completely. So with this knowledge, scientists figured out that if you put your skin care products in an environment where evaporation is slowed, the effectiveness of that product would be maintained for longer.

Who should use one?

The question here is if you should use one, well from a dermatologist’s point of view, I can say no. The idea behind a skincare fridge is to expose your skincare products to temperatures that range from 10 – 25 degrees celsius. Both scientists and dermatologists agree that the best environment for your beauty product is between 2-8 degrees celsius. This temperature range allows your products to remain stable and effective until the expiry date stated on the product so you know when to throw it out.

I recommend refrigerating all-natural, plant-based skincare products as these go bad more quickly. However, this does NOT mean that it’s OK to use any products past the expiration date on the label.

In Conclusion

I don’t think skincare fridges are a necessity, if anything they are a waste of money and take up space, however, if you feel and believe they are worth it to you personally I won’t make the decision for you. If you prefer a fancy skincare fridge to have a cool face mask or ice globes (I put mine in the freezer) then by all means.

If you do decide on a skincare fridge I have a few money-saving suggestions here:
