When you run your own business you need to be very aware when it comes to what kind of boss you are. Think about how you would want to be treated if it were you. If you wouldn’t want to be humiliated and shouted at then try to avoid being that type of boss to your employees. Your employees are the backbone of your company and they are the ones quite often holding it up. Provide Training

One of the first things you need to be aware of is that nobody applies for a job to be stuck there forever. If your workers think they are stuck in a dead-end job then they may start to look elsewhere for alternative work. One way you can avoid this from happening is by providing them training and allowing them to better themselves. This is a sure-fire way for your employees to know you appreciate them and want them to succeed in your business

Aim Higher

Encourage your employees to always be themselves and aim for higher positions within the company. If they don’t believe in themselves or don’t think they can do this then push them that little bit more. Be there for them every step of the way and support their decision if they decide not to take the role further up the career ladder. Your employees will always want to work harder for you if they think you appreciate them.

Incentives

Something else to think about when you run your own company and have many employees under one roof is to offer incentives and rewards. This doesn’t always happen, especially if training and promotions are being used. However, rewards can be anything from a day off in the future to something commemorative to remind them of their time with you. A  great idea for this might be a branded item that they can put away and keep forever, take a look at Challenge Coins Ltd for more ideas.

Realistic Goals

Set yourself and your employees’ realistic goals when it comes to targets and achievements. It will always help you to keep the SMART acronym in mind when setting these targets and goals so you don’t set anything too extreme. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. This means that you should only set targets that you know your workers can reach. Sure, you can push them a little bit, but nothing beyond their limits.

Be Approachable

Last but not least, it is essential that as a boss, you are approachable. There may be an issue within your business that needs to be rectified straight away, such as harassment or bullying. If you are too fierce and your employees feel they can’t talk to you then there will be serious complications within your company. Your workers need to know you will fix any issues that arise, so they can get back to work as soon as possible.
