There’s nothing much worse than the change in the seasons from the summer to the autumn and realising that there’s a leak somewhere in your house. Your bathroom goes through an awful lot and most of the time you don’t even realise it. The rate of the toilet being flushed throughout the day along with hand washes, showers and baths means that your plumbing is going through a lot of stress on a day to day basis. It’s – of course – the most essential room in the home now, even more than the lounge or the kitchen. You rely on your bathroom, so you need to know that it’s in the best condition that it could be.

Regular maintenance and sensible use aside, your home would have had a home inspection upon moving in, so if your plumbing is crumbling and not working correctly after this inspection and before you complete, you need to ensure you’ve brought it up. It’s worth noting that you should expect a certain amount of wear and tear on your plumbing, but it really shouldn’t be falling apart so soon. These five signs can tell you that something is wrong with your water system in the home, so that you know when to get some help.

  1. Knock, Knock! It’s The Pipes! Your pipes should not be knocking. Ideally, you shouldn’t be hearing your pipes working at all. There could be issues with water hammer, which is a pressure issue in the piping through the home. It can also indicate loose support straps – meaning that you need to get someone in to pinpoint the issue and fix it ASAP.
  2. Low Pressure, No Pressure. You should be able to have a shower in peace, with more than just a trickle of water landing on your head. If you are finding that you are having issues with the pressure in your system, then you need to get this sorted out. There are tricks that you can use to change the pressure but call for help if they don’t work.
  3. Drip…Drip…Drip. The most annoying sound in the world is a steady and constant dripping of water. You need to ensure that you tighten up any faucets or shower heads that are dripping, and if that doesn’t work, then it could be a drainage issue. Find more info on plumbing issues here.
  4. Tepid Water. Hot water tanks have a maximum capacity to draw from, but it shouldn’t run out all that quickly. You need to speak to a plumber to come out and have a look at the tank if you’re not getting hot water immediately.
  5. Slow Draining. Your sinks and pipes shouldn’t take an age to drain, but if they are you need to get them unclogged with bleaches, a pipe snake and even boiling water. If this doesn’t work, yep, you’ve got to call in the plumbers!

Plumbing isn’t something to be messed with and if there’s an issue, then you should look at how to get it sorted as soon as possible so that the issue doesn’t escalate.
