How to Pick Yourself Up When You Hit Rock Bottom

Share Post:

Fit and happy

People often describe hitting rock bottom as one of the most important times in their recovery. It’s a time when they are most vulnerable and need help. It’s not easy to hit rock bottom, and can be scary. You feel like you’re trapped, and you can never climb out, hence the name. But everyone will hit rock bottom once in their life, and plenty of challenges come with it. So, if you’re currently trying to beat your depression, get out of rock bottom, and get your life moving forward, then here’s what you need to know to make all of this happen.

Take a break

One of the best things to do when you hit rock bottom is to take a break. This can be anything from canceling social engagements to calling out of work for a mental health day. Taking time for yourself is important for all stages of life, but when it comes to dealing with your mental health, it’s especially crucial. You may be used to saying “yes” to everyone, but when your mental well-being is at stake, it’s a good idea to say no often.

Luckily there are many ways to do this, including scheduling a few downtime moments throughout the day, trying out new hobbies, and even engaging with new friends. Now, there is a difference between isolating yourself because of all of your troubles versus bending over backward to please people (friends included). So make sure to give yourself the space you need to recharge.

Talk to a friend

If you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you are at rock bottom, it’s important to reach out for help. Talking to a friend is an excellent way to get your emotions out of your system and find a solution to your problems. You’ll find that people around you are often very supportive when you hit rock bottom.

They may offer you some reassurance or support that can make a huge difference in your life. That support system is going to be there for you, whether it be just listening to you or giving you a hand in your struggles in life.

Write down your emotions

For some people, when they hit rock bottom, venting can help. This can even come in the form of writing it down. When thoughts and emotions start to overwhelm you, writing them down is a great way to express yourself. Journaling is also linked to improved mental health and a healthier immune system. This can help you stop your negative emotions from accelerating (which is known as “snowballing.”) It’s going to help you feel more grounded, and the emotions won’t pile up because they’re still being released in some form.

Go for therapy

Sometimes, all you really need is a medically assisted process to step in to help out. In fact, sometimes, all it takes to get out of rock bottom is therapy and putting yourself first. Therapy can be a great way to help you process your emotions and learn coping skills. It’s also a chance to discuss and work towards your goals with a professional.

Many people with issues will go this route; it will give you a chance to learn more about yourself. Plus, this can even teach you about healthy habits and behaviors that can boost your energy levels and help you achieve your goals. This is exactly what you may need to get out of rock bottom.
